Altered nitrogenous pools induced by the azolla-anabaena azolla symbiosis.

چکیده
The free amino acid and ammonia pools of Azolla caroliniana were analyzed by quantitative column chromatography on columns capable of separating all of the nitrogenous constituents normally found in physiological fluids. Comparisons were made of plants containing symbiotic algae and grown on nitrogen-free media, plants grown on media containing nitrate, and algae-free plants also grown on nitrate media. The major feature of the data was a very high level of intracellular ammonia found in plants which contain N(2)-fixing algal symbionts. In addition to the more usual amino acids, serine and cystathionine were found in the free amino acid pool.

Wastewater Treatment by Azolla Filiculoides: A Study on Color, Odor, COD, Nitrate, and Phosphate Removal
The aquatic fern Azolla, a small-leaf floating plant that lives in symbiosis with a nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (Anabaena), is an outstanding plant, thanks to its high biomass productivity along with its tremendous rate per unit area for nitrogen-fixation. The present study investigates the potential growth of Azolla in secondary effluents for removal of COD, phosphorus, and nitrogen. Resul...
متن کاملStudies on Molecular Identification of Anabaena Cyanobionts of Azolla Species
Azolla is a genus of free-floating water fern which is widely distributed in aquatic habitats of the tropics and temperate regions. It is one of few vascular plants known to exhibit a symbiotic association with N2fixing blue green algae, Anabaena sp. In view of this, a study was carried out on molecular identification of Anabaena strains isolated from three Azolla species. The selected Azolla s...

متن کاملThe Azolla-Anabaena azollae Relationship : XI. PHYCOBILIPROTEINS IN THE ACTION SPECTRUM FOR NITROGENASE-CATALYZED ACETYLENE REDUCTION.
Visible absorption spectra are presented for the Azolla caroliniana Willd.-Anabaena azollae Strass. association and the individual partners. Although absorption by the phycobiliproteins of the endophytic cyanobacterium clearly complements the absorption by the fern pigments, their contribution to the absorption spectrum of the association is effectively concealed by the preponderance of the Azo...
متن کاملThe cyanobiont in an Azolla fern is neither Anabaena nor Nostoc.
The cyanobacterial symbionts in the fern Azolla have generally been ascribed to either the Anabaena or Nostoc genera. By using comparisons of the sequences of the phycocyanin intergenic spacer and a fragment of the 16S rRNA, we found that the cyanobiont from an Azolla belongs to neither of these genera.
